THE BARS OF LYNN

Night of 25 August 1986

29 Burke's 757 Lounge

This page is typed noticeably askew, the lines running uphill across the sheet.

Here's one on Western that seems like it's out of a western. No question this place is a shambles and with the bare bulb mood lighting it makes you feel like it's always closing time and they're getting ready to kick everyone out. Not that they'd have alot of customers clamouring for last rounds nosiree...what customers were there seemed more in need of last rites. The bar is very old and ornate and has fallen on hard times. The bar mirror having been painted over about 20 years ago by an art student with a depressing landscape of death valley with signs stuck in it advertising Early Times. Probably a primitive kind of subliminal advertising .. desert...thirst...bar...etc. In the backroom there are darts, broken furniture and cleaning equipment which I guess they've lost the instructions for. One patron supposed that the bar was named after the size of the women here but these reviewers think it was probably an off night as they were in fact only barely recognizable as such. As an aside there are no toilets in the bathroom. So plan ahead.

Photograph: a corner building at a wide junction. A projecting sign reads "Burke's / 757 / BAR Lounge". A large Busch sign with the eagle device is painted or mounted on the brick side wall. A streetlight and traffic signals.

Reading notes

  • ADDRESS, effectively confirmed: "Here's one on Western", the number 757 in
the name, and the sign in the photograph reading 757. Combined with the 1930 built
commercial building at 757 Western Ave that the research turned up, this is as
close to settled as anything gets without a directory.
Consequence: this revives the theory that THE 595 CAFE (#33) sits at number 595
of some street, and makes the "597 Summer St" listing look like an error or a
    neighbouring unit.
