Enter in the rear of this one-story stucco building, reminiscent of a bomb shelter; Welcome to the Shawmut. Its a hop back in time - thirty years or more - a real Rod Serling gem.
Although the decor - tables, bar stools, waitresses, etc., were all straight out of the 1950's, all were so well preserved, it was downright eerie.
The atmosphere was lighthearted and full of dance while the Shawmut Trio methodically rummaged through as many as three songs in a row between breaks. The band consisted of a jock on the magnus, "we can make any song sound corny" organ, a cat with brushes rapping on the skins, and an ace on sax.
The average age of the Shawmut's guests was over 60, nevertheless, dancing was king - a good place to trip the light fantastic. We spent time at one of the Shawmut's many formica tabletop booths, which incidentally had juke box selections at our fingertips. With choices like: "Hey Bartender" by Jerry Lee and "Under the Boardwalk" by (J.C.M.). The Shawmut was unanimously voted the best of the evening!!
