THE BARS OF LYNN

Night of 19 August 1986

19 The Corinthian Club

Off the beaten path but you know what the saying is. When we first walked in the "Members & Guests Only" sign sort of worried us, but they seem to have an enlightened attitude about patrons. Bathroom is great with signs along the walls & in front of you - "Flush Like You Mean It", "Stand Close, Flush", "Flush, So I don't Smell", "Pretend You're At Home - Flush, Flush, Flush". Even I got the point. People must get very drunk here. While getting the beers, I met Jim Hughes who came to be our host for the evening. Jim sported a red moustache and a white Miller Lite hat and was obsessed with discussing the Commonwealth Status of the Eastern Seaboard States. When I introduced Jim and he found out they had the same name, he talked about how his dad's name was Jim but his mother called him Jamie, his son was called Jimmy and he had a grandson James. I guess they like the name. Jim was 47. He didn't remember how long he'd been a member but told us the bar used to light up "all different colors" and "was any of us good at wiring?...I'm a painter by trade so I know about colors but not wiring.....You guys ought to go to the Lithuanian Club behind the Bus Station...cause you can't go into all the bars in this town cause you're not the right color. ("What's the right color Jim?" we asked). "What's the right color? GREEN. You guys going? Well, bye Grant and Jim. Watch out for the blue people."

"Thought you said the green people?"
"Oh, them too, but blues are the worst."
"Uh, O.K., bye Jim."

So ended our visit to the Corinthian.

Reading notes

  • Location clue: "Off the beaten path." Jim Hughes refers to "the Lithuanian Club behind the Bus Station", which locates the Lynn bus station as a landmark and may also bear on #34, THE BUS STOP.
